About Depression
For a long time depression has been seen as simply a poor attitude or something you just "get over." Depression is actually a disorder of the brain and can be caused by genetic, biological, psychological, or environmental factors. Depression is the number one reason students drop out of college and if left untreated, can lead to serious consequences.
The Biochemistry of Depression
Neurotransmitters, important signaling molecules within the brain, play a key role in depression. Changes in the levels of certain neurotransmitters affect the synapses of the brain that are responsible in maintaining mood stability. Usually they are at a lower level and the synapses are unable to be formed, causing mood instability.
