20,000 Bearcats is an initiative started by the University of Cincinnati Student Government in response to studies showing about half of all college students suffer from a mental illness. Student Government increased funding for UC Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to $400,000 during the 2015-2016 school year. This allowed more staff to be hired and the cost of counseling sessions to drop from $60 to $25. As a result of this initiative, CAPS saw more than double the amount of students during the 2015 school year than they had the previous year.
During Mental Health Awareness Week, the student section showed their support for the mental health initiative by holding bright yellow flyers that read "I stand up for 20,000 Bearcats living with mental illnesses." The announcement was made at halftime of the 2015 UC vs. Miami football game, students and fans alike then stood in solidarity for mental illness.
